If you've called me, I assume you know who I am. Leave a message and I'll get back to you when I feel like it.
cloakand_danger: (know-it-all ϟ not to know this)
Background: As a half-elf, Yuan has the ability to sense mana and energy flows in his environment, including in the people around him. He can tell whether or not someone is human with a momentary examination, and if he tries he may be able to pinpoint an elemental affiliation as well, depending on whether there is one and how strong it is.

The fields:

Name: I need to know who you are and who you're playing, obvs.
Is Yuan allowed to sense them?: If not, we'll say his augment is blocking it.
Human?: This can be a yes or no question, unless you want to elaborate. Even elves from different worlds probably wouldn't feel exactly like elves from his world, not to mention the wide variety of other things out there, so he'll only be able to make guesses from his experience as to what people are if they aren't human (though if it feels like magic and has pointed ears, he'll probably assume it's at least part elven unless told otherwise).
How strong?: This can and should be vague: Yuan can't tell your character's exact power level or anything like that, but he can tell the difference between someone with a few traces of magic, a competent caster, and a being made entirely of elemental energy.
Elemental affinity: Yuan comes from a world where the rules of magic are relatively concrete. Magic comes in eight elemental flavors, in four opposing pairs: Fire and Ice, Wind and Earth, Lightning and Water, Light and Dark. If your character's abilities fall into one of those elements and their aura is strong enough, Yuan might be able to tell. (Other Tales characters: unless instructed otherwise, if they have a clear canonical element, Yuan will probably pick up on it.)
Weirdness/other?: Anything else you think I should know?

(If I ever get any canonmates, this sheet is optional for them unless they have any important power-related development from previous games.)

☄ First Impressions

♚ VISUAL: Yuan is around six feet tall, with bright blue hair and bright green eyes. His ears are rounded, his features are sharp, and his overall build is a bit lean for a human and a bit husky for an elf.
♚ FASHION: Pretty much wears the same padded caster armor shown in his icons wherever he goes. He dresses...well, honestly he dresses like a character out of a fantasy-themed JRPG, and while I'm not okay with explicit fourthwalling, I am okay with modern characters noticing that.
♚ DEMEANOUR: Yuan holds his head high and his shoulders squared. He obviously expects people to pay attention to him and take him seriously, and generally tries to be in control no matter the situation.
♚ AURAL: Here's a cutscene in which he features. (As a bonus, if you keep watching you can see a bit of how he fights.)
♚ OLFACTORY: Usually just like regular soap, but when he's agitated or threatened there's a definite hint of ozone hovering near him.
♚ MENTAL INFORMATION: He's strong-willed but has no particular mental shields. Feel free to pick up surface thoughts, I will happily facilitate this. If you want to go deeper, let me know and we'll discuss, Yuan's mind is not a nice place.
♚ MAGICAL INFORMATION: He is magical! He is lightning-flavored by nature. He has a power crystal at the base of his throat, through which all his mana runs, which amplifies his energy and adds light-elemental abilities to his repertoire. Those who can tell may notice that a fair amount of his soul actually resides inside the crystal.

☄ OOC

♚ BACKTAGGING: I work full-time Monday-Friday, so tagging will mostly happen in the evenings and on weekends. I enjoy boomerang tagging, but will continue backtagging for quite a while as needed.
♚ FOURTHWALLING: Oh, please don't. His sanity is a little shaky as it is. On the flipside, I am okay with meta-commentary, and I do try to incorporate as many gameplay elements into playing him as I can, so your characters are free to comment on any of that as long as they don't specifically mention the Tales series.
♚ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: I'm comfortable with whatever. Yuan likes his space, and will let anyone know if they're invading it, either by pointedly moving away or telling them to back off. If they persist, they will probably get lightly shocked, but he will warn them first.
♚ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: I'm good with whatever here, too. Yuan is an experienced fighter with both sword and magic. That link up in his voice section is a mid-game JRPG boss fight, and it's implied he wasn't going all-out, because he wanted to capture the protagonist rather than kill him.
♚ RELATIONSHIPS: I enjoy shipping! I play Yuan as bi with slight preference toward women, particularly women who can and will kick his ass. If your character gets close to him, there's a good chance I will ship them (unless he decides they're too young and adopts them instead, but 'too young' is a very, very nebulous term coming from a guy who's four thousand going on twenty-six).

Prompt is "Chaste makes waste", so mild warnings for sexual content. Nothing explicit, though.

If you have any problems with how I play Yuan, or any advice on how to help me play him better, by all means speak up. You can also try and plot here if you want. Anon is on and tracking is off...or it will be as soon as I figure out the settings.

After looking over some just-for-fun astrology with Saffy this weekend, I thought I'd put up a bit of a character essay detailing out some of Yuan's mock star chart, and why I chose those signs/what they mean. Note that I didn't actually try to put in a birth date and/or year for this - I just went through all the descriptions and picked the best-fitting signs.

(Yes, I know Earth astrology couldn't possibly apply to Aselian characters. Refer back to the part that says 'just for fun'.)

I suppose I should get around to actually setting this thing up...

Hello, you've reached the voice mail for Yuan Ka-Fai. If you haven't been able to reach me by journal, I'm probably not likely to pick up here, either, but leave a message and I'll listen to it when I get a chance.

On Martel

I'm not sure I have the time or patience to turn this into a full essay like the one Saffy wrote on Anna, but I figure I should at least have some bullet points in mind to help Martel players interact with my Yuan.

* Yuan still loves Martel. There's no doubt about that anymore.
* While he may never be over her, he has come to terms with the fact that she's dead. Finding her alive again will be as upsetting as it is a relief.
* Martel is not perfect. She was a mortal woman just like any other, and while there's no doubt she was an extraordinarily good one, she had her flaws. Mithos was just plain wrong about that.
* Martel is not perfectly innocent. The amazing thing about Martel is not her purity, but the fact that she's seen so much pain and evil in the world, and still loves the world, still believes that people are basically good. A pure, sweet innocent like I've seen her played as so many times could never have survived a war and horrible discrimination with her mind and ideals intact.
* Martel is understanding. She sees the pure motives behind every action people take, and it distresses her when she can't find any. She really, really wants to believe that everyone is good and unselfish at some deep level, and it hurts her when they aren't.
* Martel is not unbreakable. Just very, very strong. She would have shattered during her quest without her friends for support.

Basically, if you play her flat, Yuan will wonder where his Martel went, and pull in on himself and wonder what's wrong with him because he can't love a cardboard cutout of a canon sue. And no one wants that. So please, carefully consider whether your Martel is rounded before playing her.
